WALDOBORO — The Camden-Rockport and Medomak eighth grade softball teams met on the diamond Friday, May 21 in Waldoboro for a nail-biting affair.

In a contest primarily defense-driven, the host Riverhawks emerged from the contest victorious with a 4-3 victory, overcoming a late rally attempt by Camden-Rockport.

At the plate for Medomak were Kytana Williamson (two walks), Audrey Jackson (double, single), Lilly Christ (reached via dropped third strike), Lillian Harvey (walk) and Erica Waite (single).

At the plate for Camden-Rockport were Leah (walk) and Maya Stone (single, two RBI). Only portions of names were available for most Camden-Rockport players.

In the pitcher’s circle for Medomak was Williamson (13 strikeouts, walk, hit) while Stone (12 strikeouts, three walks, three hits) pitched for Camden-Rockport.

The scoring began in the first inning when the Schooners plated a run off a Medomak error and when Medomak’s Williamson was walked and stole her way around the bases to make it a 1-1 contest through the opening inning.

Neither team scored in the next three innings, though Laukka nearly tallied an inside-the-park homerun for Camden-Rockport in the third inning but was tagged out at the plate after a series of throws from the right field fence from Maddy Wilshire to Abby Young to Williamson to Erica Waite.

In the fifth inning, Medomak plated its second run of the contest, and claimed the lead, when Waite singled before stealing her way around the bases. Williamson then walked and also stole her way around the bases to make it a 3-1 contest in the fifth.

The Riverhawks gained a 4-1 advantage in the fifth when Jackson singled and swiped a pair of bases to be driven in on a third strike when she managed to slip in as the third run as the Schooner defense focused on the batter heading to first.

The sixth inning resulted in scoreless work for both teams.

Camden-Rockport nearly rallied its way to victory in the seventh and final inning that began as Trysdan reached base on a Medomak error and stole her way to third. Leah walked while Stone singled and drove in two runs to make it a one-run contest.

Williamson fanned the next three batters she faced to seal the victory for the Riverhawks and cut the Schooner rally short.
