BELFAST — A Lewiston man charged with stabbing his son was sentenced to four years in prison with all but one year suspended in Waldo County Unified Court June 3.

Allen Sanborn, 60, was arrested in Belmont Dec. 29, following a confrontation with his teenage son that ended with the younger Sanborn being stabbed.

Sanborn was charged with aggravated assault, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, reckless conduct, and domestic violence assault following the incident, though the charge of aggravated assault was dropped as part of a plea deal.

The longest sentence given was for criminal threatening, which resulted in the four-year sentence and two years of probation. Sanborn was also sentenced to one year in prison for reckless conduct, and four months for domestic violence assault.

While it is unclear what sparked the disagreement, it began when Sanborn was driving with his son and his son’s girlfriend, according to police records.

As the argument escalated, Sanborn pulled to the side of the road in Belmont where his son got out of the vehicle to call for someone else to pick him and his girlfriend up. This reportedly angered the elder Sanborn, prompting him to exit the vehicle and assault his son with a knife before a physical fight ensued between the pair.

Both Allen Sanborn and his son were transported to the hospital for treatment following their altercation.
