Maine State Police said the services for Detective Ben Campbell will take place in Portland on Tuesday, April 9, at the Cross Center at 11 a.m.

His body was transported to a Millinocket funeral home this afternoon from the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta following an autopsy.  A procession of State Police cruisers escorted the hearse to Millinocket.

Governor Janet Mills issued the following statement on the death of Maine State Trooper Detective Benjamin Campbell, a seven-year veteran of the Maine State Police who was struck and killed this morning in a crash on Interstate 95 in Hampden:

“Our state is heartbroken over the loss of Detective Benjamin Campbell. Maine’s law enforcement professionals put themselves in harm’s way every day to protect our state, keep our communities safe, and help our fellow citizens. Detective Campbell dedicated his career to fulfilling that mission and, ultimately, gave his life in service of it. On behalf of the people of Maine, I express our deepest and unwavering gratitude for his service. Together let us keep his family, friends, and loved ones, along with Maine’s entire law enforcement community, in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Governor Mills has also directed that the flags be lowered on the day of funeral services.

Maine State Police said April 3 that a trooper was struck and killed in a morning crash on Interstate 95 in Hampden.

The crash took place south of the Colebrook Road overpass just after 7:30 a.m. The southbound lanes at the crash site have been closed and traffic is being diverted at the Colebrook exit. The trooper was out of his vehicle at the site of disabled car along the Interstate and the other vehicle involved in the crash was a tractor trailer.

The trooper was rushed by ambulance to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor where he died.

State Police say a news conference is likely at 3 p.m. this afternoon at the State Police barracks in Bangor to give out additional details of the crash and the identity of the trooper.

Governor Janet Mills directed that the United States and State of Maine flags be flown at half-staff statewide immediately for the remainder of today, April 3, in honor of a Maine State Trooper who was struck and killed in the line of duty this morning in a crash on Interstate 95 in Hampden.

Governor Mills has also directed that the flags be lowered on the day of the trooper’s funeral service. An additional flag notice will be sent after the date of the service is announced.
