Maine Game Wardens recover body of 17-year-old who drowned in the Saco River

    BUXTON — Maine Game Wardens recovered the body of a 17-year-old who drowned in the Saco River in Buxton. Maine Game Warden Bruce Loring made the recovery in about 50 feet of water at approximately 7 p.m, Aug. 9, according to a news release from the warden’s office.

    Steel Crawford, age 17, of Freeport, was swimming with friends at Pleasant Point Park in Buxton. Crawford was swinging on a rope swing, and after letting go of the swing, landed awkwardly in the deep water and never surfaced.

    Game wardens recovered the body in an area down river of the Route 202 bridge and upriver of the Skelton Dam where water depths are in excess of 50 feet. Wardens and volunteers of the Buxton Police Department, Buxton Fire Department, Saco Fire Department, Standish fire Department, York County EMA, Kennebunk Fire Department, Goodwin Mills Fire Department, Hollis Fire Department and Maine State Police also searched along the shore by foot, on the water in boats, and helped Maine Warden Service divers to search the river.
