BELFAST - Maine Farmland Trust (MFT) is celebrating 20 years of growing the future for farming.
The organization began in 1999, when a small group of farmers and farm advocates planted the seed of an idea: farmland matters and should be protected. Word spread, meetings were held with like minds, and soon, MFT began as the first and only land trust in the state focused on protecting farmland and supporting farmers.
MFT will host a 20th Anniversary Kick-Off Party on Thursday, January 24 at the United Farmer’s Market building in Belfast from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The evening will be a festive gathering to look back at MFT’s many milestones since 1999, and celebrate the founders and members who helped shape the organization along the way. There will be hearty snacks prepared by Belfast Co-op, along with local beer and wine. Guests will enjoy an interactive timeline of MFT’s history and a retrospective exhibit, featuring art shown at MFT Gallery over the past ten years that highlights founders, members, and protected farms. At the end of the night, guests will have a chance to win special giveaways featuring local goodies from farms and other businesses.
MFT has long been part of Belfast’s downtown community and moved its office from Bucksport to Main St. in Belfast in 2006.
“As we start our 20th year as an organization, it seemed fitting to celebrate in Belfast,” said Outreach Director, Ellen Sabina. “We work with farms all over the state and now have an office in Portland, but Belfast and Waldo County will always feel like our home.”
The kick-off event is free and open to all, but please RSVP by visiting the event website: mainefarmlandtrust.org/event/ kick-off/, or calling Rachel K. at 207-338-6575.
