SPRUCE HEAD — The Craignair Gallery invites the public to the opening reception of Maine Boats and Other Distant Places by Rockland artist Christos Calivas on Wednesday, Oct. 11, from 4 to 7 p.m.

In this exhibit, Christos Calivas focuses his artistic lens on boats found sailing along the Maine coast, and also, scenes from other distant places.

Calivas lives and works in Rockland and spends part of his time in his family village in Greece, from which he derives inspiration for his paintings. In addition to being a full time painter, he is an avid sailor, a licensed Merchant Marine Captain, and holds a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree. His passion for sailing and the outdoor world is often reflected in his subject matter which often encompasses waterfront scenes and local architecture.  Calivas also enjoys painting the people and characters that inhabit these places, creating colorful and reductive figurative studies.

Maine Boats and Other Distant Places is on exhibit from October 11 through November 7.

The Craignair Gallery, located at 5 Third Street in Spruce Head, is open daily.
