The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of a scam targeting local healthcare professionals and demanding money in the name of the KCSO.

According to the KCSO, a group of scammers is currently calling healthcare professional and identifying themselves as the Knox County Sheriff's Office "wants and citation section." One of the telephone numbers used is 207-579-0390 (a Boothbay Harbor exchange).

When you call the number, the message tells you to leave a name, number and message, according to the KCSO, in a news release. If they make contact, a male identifies himself as Lt. Reggie Walker with the Knox County Sheriff's Office. They say that you have missed a court date and you have to pay a fine. They then tell you not to hang up or it will change from a civil offense to a criminal charge.

This is not the Knox County Sheriff's Office making the call. Please report these incidents to Knox County Sheriff's Office, 207-594-0677. Tell the dispatcher what occurred and to notify Lt. Reggie Walker. They will activate a complaint and notify Lt. Walker. Do not give out any personal information. They are currently targeting healthcare professionals at their work numbers or any numbers they can associate with you.

“Be aware that there are several scams that are ongoing and never release any personal information over the phone,” said Sheriff Tim Carroll. “Never give out any part of your credit card or debit card numbers.”
