Local Jazz at The Waldo June 3 with three Midcoast Maine bands

    WALDOBORO — Local Jazz music is back at The Waldo Theater, Saturday June 3, at 7 p.m., with three Midcoast Maine bands celebrating the power of original composition and improvisation.

    Simplexity is led by keyboardist Alan Boyer and features all-original compositions. Though rooted in jazz, Boyer’s music has its own unique flavor. “It’s reminiscent of Charles Mingus with heavy funk inspiration and unique yet ‘groovable’ time signatures,” said Waldo Theatre Executive Director Susan Hodder, in a news release.

    Electric Bonfire is a four-piece band featuring Rock, Reggae, Funk, and Groove styles, The Lincolnville, Maine based group was formed in 2016 by Mitch Markowitz and John Luft on guitars, vocals with Mike Whitehead on electric bass and Jason Dean on drums. Group members are known for their original songs and thoughtful lyrics that often reflect on current issues.

    Whitehead/Dean Group is led by trumpeter Mike Whitehead and drummer Jason Dean. Also featured are Mitch Markowitz on guitar and Glen DuBois on electric bass. The band’s music has its roots in the Jazz/Funk Fusion movement of the 1970’s, featuring music by Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard and more.

    Advance General admission tickets are $25; $30 the day of the show. A limited number of front row seat tickets are available for $35.

    Doors open at 6 p.m., and concessions, including beer and wine will be available for purchase.
