The Knox County Nurses Guild, a nonprofit founded in 1954 by a group of nurses dedicated to promoting the nursing profession and raising funds for nursing scholarships, recently gathered for its annual holiday luncheon at the Owls Head Community building.

The Guild was founded in September 1954, with the purpose of encouraging area graduates to enter the nursing profession. The first officer group was Eliza Steele, President (1954-1969), Jean Jewett, Vice-President and Lorna Clark, Secretary/Treasurer.

In its first year, the Guild established a $400 scholarship. By the late 1980s the Guild presented scholarships of $500 to area graduates.

In 2019, the Guild awarded $4,000 in scholarships to six recipients.

Current president is Amy Lowe,  with officers Vice President Wanda Simmons, Secretary Evelyn Lowe, and Treasurer Catherine Wiejaczka overseeing the board.

The Guild is working to expand its membership. All nurses and supporters of nursing are welcome.  More information can be obtained by calling 207.593.9151.
