ROCKLAND — The following cases were closed in Knox County Unified Court from Feb. 4-8.

Randall Scott Lind, Jr., 40, of Union, unlawful sexual contact in Union on March 1, 2014, 364 days in prison with all but 52 days suspended, probation one year; gross sexual assault, three counts, dismissed; unlawful sexual contact, twelve counts, dismissed.

Lind pleaded no contest to unlawful sexual contact Feb. 6. A no-contest plea has the same basic effect as a guilty plea, where the defendant is convicted and accepts punishment, but does not actually admit guilt.

The more serious charges of three counts of gross sexual assault that occurred in March, July and October of 2014 were all dismissed.

Lind is now required to register as a sex offender for 10 years since he was convicted on one count of unlawful sexual contact.

He has already served his 52 days at the Knox County Jail after he was arrested in March 2018 and before he was released from jail on bail the following month.

Lind was initially arrested Union who was arrested March 2 at the Knox County Sheriff’s Office after he turned himself in on an outstanding arrest warrant for sexually assaulting a young girl numerous times.

He made his initial court appearance before Judge Paul Mathews in Knox County Unified Court on March 5, 2018.

His bail was set at $25,000 cash with no third party bail allowed. Judge Susan Sparaco lowered Lind’s bail to $1,000 cash in April 2018.

Lind was arrested on a warrant obtained by Detective Justin Twitchell based on his investigation that began in late December 2017.

According to the affidavit filed by Twitchell in Knox County Unified Court, the sexual assaults involved a victim who was 11-years-old at the time of the incidents, which occurred in 2014 and early 2015.

The investigation began after Twitchell received a report from the Department of Health and Human Services. They had been alerted by a physician’s office about a patient who said that she had been touched inappropriately.

When police interviewed Lind, he denied the charges, but declined to take a polygraph examination at the Sheriff’s Office, according to the affidavit.

Lind was represented by attorney Philip Cohen of Waldoboro.
