UNION — Kenneth Milton Sabins, 88, died peacefully and went into the presence of his Lord on Saturday, November 21, 2020 at Penbay Medical Center.

Born March 24, 1932 in Swampscott, Massachusetts to Milton and Gladys (Pillsbury) Sabins, he was educated in local schools and graduated from Lynn Vocational High School in 1949.

After graduation Ken enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951 and served for 4 years aboard the USS Algol (AKA-54).

On August 23, 1958 he married Elizabeth (Betty) Reid and they moved to Union where they shared 60 years of marriage with their 3 children, Glenn, Julie, and Duane.

Not long after moving to Union he started work at F.W. Gorden’s, a small grocery store where he worked for 7 years. He then began working for the U.S. Postal Service in Union, starting as a clerk and worked his way up to
become the Postmaster, retiring after 30 years of service.

Ken enjoyed his work there and was very accommodating to the people in town who would come in. So much so that, when it was the Christmas season, and it appeared that people were not going to get their packages that
were sitting in the Post Office, he would put on a festive red and white striped shirt with a red tie on Christmas Eve and personally deliver them so that the families would have them in time.

One of the things Ken missed when he retired, was seeing some of the towns people. Ken showed he cared and was always giving of himself and his time for others.

He was a member and Deacon of Faith Bible Baptist Church in Searsmont. He loved his church family like his own and was passionate about his family and friends learning to know his Savior as he did.

Ken enjoyed feeding and watching birds and had quite a job the job keeping the feeders full as it was a struggle with all the chipmunks and squirrels he had in the area. He was also quite the handyman, always fixing something to make it work. Whenever someone in the family had something they needed fixed, they would call on Ken to help them out and usually found a way to figure it out.

One of the things Ken loved most in life was his family. He was always ready to babysit, or drive them where they needed to go, or even play a game of “Old Maid.” A phone call for help or advice was needed on occasion as well.

Grandpa was always ready to help. The family camp on Seven Tree Pond was always a peaceful place to go on a warms summer day and his family was not far away. Cookouts with all the family and watching the grandchildren swim always brought him much joy. He was a very big part of their lives and he will be missed.

Predeceased by his parents, his loving wife, Betty in 2019, their son Duane in 2015, and a grandson, Adam Sabins in 2005, he is survived by his children, Glenn Sabins and his wife Angela, Julie Pennell and her husband Greg, all of Union; 7 grandchildren, Erin Hall, Nicole Colburn, Annie Reed and her husband Mike, Jonas M. Sabins and his companion Sharon Sukeforth, Jillian Gagnon and her husband Josh, Amanda Sabins, and Cassie Hedgstrom; 12 great-grandchildren, Reid, Kade, Bryce, Olivia, Lukas, Lyleigh, Jonas, McKenna, Caleb, Alex, Velicity, and Sophie; his brother Donald Sabins and his wife Nancy, and several nieces and nephews.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a public memorial service will be held in the spring of 2021 and will be announced.
