Rockland Public Library will welcome journalist and garden expert Tom Atwell, author of the newspaper column "Maine Gardener," for a virtual talk on Thursday, June 18, at 6:30 p.m. The presentation, entitled "Gardening: Healing the Mind and Improving Property During Tough Times," will be divided into a half hour focusing on tips for garden improvement, and a second half hour discussing summer vegetables.
Tom Atwell was born in Skowhegan and grew up mostly in Farmington. He graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in journalism, then served two years in the Army, including one in Vietnam. His journalism career brought him to the Lewiston Daily Sun, then the Portland Press Herald/Evening Express/Sunday Telegram. He started writing his gardening column in 2004 and has continued to write it as a freelancer since retiring.
Married to the former Nancy Durrance, they have lived in a house built on part of what was once her grandparents' farm in Cape Elizabeth since 1975. They have a daughter, a son, and four grandchildren.
