Ice Festival returns to Belfast with addition of State of Maine Ice Carving Championship

Event has passed

BELFAST — The Belfast Ice Festival is returning to downtown Belfast, February 25, 26, and 27, 2022.

The event was imagined as a way to celebrate winter but embrace it. Last year’s event was the epitome of that design, according to Our Town Belfast, in a news release. Despite the damp weekend, thousands of people descended on Belfast to enjoy ice sculptures, live ice carving demonstrations, and ice bars throughout the downtown.

“Everyone starts to get a little stir-crazy towards the end of February, “ said one of the organizers, Tina DelSanto, a downtown business owner. “The event is a fun way to get people outside and moving around; we were thrilled to see many people come for the inaugural event.”

Like last year’s event, this year’s Belfast Ice Festival will include ice sculptures throughout the downtown, live ice carving demonstrations, and several ice bars. Several additional activities are being added for 2022, including a luminary walk on the Rail Trail and a children’s area. This year’s event will also feature the addition of the State of Maine Ice Carving Championship.

“Last year’s event was so much fun and came together at the last minute,” said Ryan Otis, another organizer, and downtown business owner. “When we started thinking about this year’s event, we knew we had more time to plan, so we looked for ways to expand and grow the event.

“One of the best ideas we had was the addition of the State of Maine Ice Carving Championship,” said Otis. This first-year event will be limited to ten teams to ensure we can do a good job. We’re encouraging amateurs and professionals to sign-up. We’ll provide the ice blocks, and the carvers, individuals or teams, provide the tools.”

A panel of judges and input from the public will help crown the winner of the inaugural Championships.

Support for the 2022 event includes local business sponsors and a Maine Communities Grant from the Maine Office of Tourism.
