ROCKLAND — Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center will host its annual open house, Saturday, Dec. 7, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. During the open house, the Center will have an opening reception for artists Jane Herbert, of Waldoboro, Laurie Murray, of Rockland, and Carla Skinder, of St. George.
Jane Herbert will display seascapes of Muscongus Bay; Carla Skinder will show wildlife photography from around the world; and Laurie Murray will show an exhibit on nature journaling.
Herbert is a lifelong painter using acrylics on a variety of surfaces for more than fifty years. Exhibited are realistic seascapes painted during and as a result of visits to islands in Muscongus Bay. She has included several pieces that symbolically reflect both sadness and hope for the plight of the natural world.
Skinder has traveled the world capturing the wonders of wildlife through the camera lens. This exhibit will highlight some of her favorite photos from around the world, and will be a revolving show.
Murray, a former university creative writing lecturer and writing center director and a self-taught naturalist, has been taking classes on nature journaling, keeping journals, and excited to share with others. Her exhibit will illustrate the practice of nature journaling and field sketching. In January, she will be forming a nature journaling group at the visitor center.
This art will be on display through March 2020.
While at the open house, make a holiday craft from pressed seaweed with help from Herring Gut Learning Center. Sip fair trade hot chocolate, hot cider or coffee while you tour the visitor center.
The Nature Store will be open as well.
The center is located at 9 Water Street in Rockland.
