Hatchery program at CHRHS to host community event, Oct. 23

Event has passed

ROCKPORT — Camden Hills Regional High School students of the Hatchery program are hosting a community event at the school this Saturday, October 23.

The theme of the event is Radical Reuse. Students have been practicing radical reuse at The Hatchery Workshop all semester: all materials (mostly lumber) that have been used for projects thus far have been diverted from the landfill, according to the Danny Salomon, the new Hatchery coordinator, in a news release. The class deconstructed pallets to source lumber during the first week of school ("PALLETPALOOZA"). As training exercises, students have learned how to build simple outdoor furniture pieces using reclaimed lumber – all of which serve the new "Learning Circle" for teaching outdoors.

The event on October 23 will be a celebration and continuation of these sustainable practices.

The afternoon (2 - 5 p.m.) will be festival-like, with food, music, games, and hands-on workshops for all ages – all reuse-themed. Many of the students from this fall's Shop Apprenticeship will be working the event, leading furniture-building and screen-printing workshops: skills they've gained in the program thus far.

“They are very excited to showcase what they've learned!” said the release.

In the evening (5 - 7 p.m.) there will be a speaker panel that includes two CHRHS parents, Shawn Stockman and Tia Anderson, who will be speaking briefly about the good, bad, and ugly of waste management in the region and the importance of reuse (via Habitat's ReStore), respectively.

The final presenter is Sara Badiali, “a very special guest” – said Salomon – who was instrumental in passing the “unprecedented deconstruction ordinance in Portland Oregon,” and has since helped other cities (Pittsburgh, Denver, etc.) pass similar ordinances and transition the wasteful demolition industry toward deconstruction which can save upwards of 90% of building material from heading to the landfill.
