ROCKPORT — Maine Coast Heritage Trust’s Teen Agriculture Crew invites the public for an end of summer Harvest Celebration and Gleaning Party on Thursday, August 29, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., at Erickson Fields Preserve, 164 West Street.
All ages are welcome for tours of the Crew’s 4-acre garden, samples of their harvest and a guided gleaning party to collect produce to donate to food panties. This is an opportunity for a behind-the-scenes look at a primarily teen-run AG operation that annually produces 20,000+ lbs of produce for the Midcoast community, including five area food pantries and the MSAD 28 school lunch program.
In conjunction with the Harvest Celebration, Erickson Fields will be celebrating its 10th anniversary as a preserve of Maine Coast Heritage Trust, a state-wide land conservation organization. Since 2009, MCHT has managed the property, which was previously family dairy farm, to keep the land healthy and productive for haying and agricultural programs, including a community garden and the U-Maine Cooperative Extension’s Kids Can Grow program.
The Harvest Celebration and Gleaning Party is a free, kid-friendly event. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Attendees planning to join the Gleaning Party must wear closed-toed shoes and dress for outdoor work.
