Hampden hands Camden Hills ice hockey first home loss

ROCKPORT — The Camden Hills varsity ice hockey team suffered its first loss at the Midcoast Recreation Center in Rockport this season as Hampden Academy handed the Windjammers a 3-2 loss on Wednesday, Jan. 23. 

Both teams scored once in the opening period, while Hampden Academy netted two goals in the second and Camden Hills scored once in the second period. 

Scoring for Camden Hills were Nate Vanlonkhuyzen (unassisted) and Bryce Tyler (Jason Greenleaf, Michael Blackwell assist). 

Two goals for Hampden Academy came from Rece Poulin on a Cooper Leland assist and one came courtesy Sam Economy (Parker Shawley, Khaleb Hale assist).

In the goalie net, William Gardner recorded 28 saves for the Windjammers, while Evan Thomas tallied 18 for Hampden. 

“It was a disappointing loss for the Windjammers as this was our first loss at home,” said Camden Hills head coach John Magri. 

Magri also praised Gardner for “making key saves during a pair of Hampden breakaways and a flurry of shots during the multiple penalty kills.”

With the loss, Camden Hills dropped to 7-4 on the season and now face Brewer at home on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 6 p.m. 

In the Class B North standings, Camden Hills sits in second place with 36.7284 points.
