Food Waste in Maine webinar: The Problem and ‘Triple Bottom Line’ Solutions

Event has passed

Susanne Lee of the University of Maine will speak about Maine’s problem with food waste and practical solutions in an online webinar hosted by Merryspring Nature Center on Tuesday, January 25, at 12 p.m.

“An estimated 40% of food produced is never actually eaten. Moving far from the thrifty “Waste Not, Want Not” mentality of Yankee heritage, Mainers today throw food at an alarming rate; 97% of which ends up in Maine landfills where it produces methane, a leading contributor to climate change,” said Merryspring, in a news release.

“Compounded on the issue is Maine’s high food rate of security, leading New England with 1 of 5 children affected. Yet, not all hope is lost,” said Merryspring.

In this online talk, Susanne Lee will speak about sustainable food waste solutions with “triple bottom line” benefits – saving money, feeding communities, and protecting the environment.

Following a successful career as a consumer products marketing and business development executive, Susanne Lee returned to academia as a marketing professor at the Maine Business School at the University of Maine. Her lifelong passion for sustainability and triple bottom line business solutions (benefiting profits, people and the planet) encouraged her to serve on the Materials Management team at the Sen. George J. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions at the University. Currently, Lee is a Faculty Fellow at the Mitchell Center and leads a transdisciplinary student/faculty team focused on developing solutions to end food waste and loss in Maine.

This talk is part of the Online Winter Talk series at Merryspring Nature Center, sponsored by Allen Insurance & Financial.
