WATERVILLE — The Five Town Basketball fifth grade boys and girls teams traveled to Waterville over the weekend to play in the Central Maine Basketball Conference championship with both teams bringing home championship trophies.

For the fifth grade girls, they started out Sunday, Feb. 10 with a 26-10 victory over Gardiner in the semifinals to boost their record to 9-1 on the season.

Awaiting the local girls in the title game was an undefeated Lawrence. Thanks to grit and toughness, though, the Five Town squad pulled away with a 39-33 victory to finish the season with a 10-2 record and as champions.

On the boys side, the quarterfinals were Saturday, Feb. 9 with Five Town knocking off Pittsfield 34-10 before returning to the court Sunday to challenge Augusta, a team that has always topped Five Town over the past few years — except for this instance when Five Town squeaked out a 16-15 victory.

In the championship game, Five Town was able to take down undefeated Gardiner by a final tally of 43-37 to finish the season with a 9-2 record and as champions.
