Event has passed

SOUTH THOMASTON — Georges River Land Trust hosts Kirk Gentalen, naturalist and environmental educator, on an early bird walk on the new Bobolink Trail in South Thomaston, Thursday, May 16, at 7 a.m.

This will be an easy walk to look for birds and learn about the ecosystem of hayfields, woods, and wetlands on the Riverview Hayfields Preserve that stretches from the banks of the St. George River to the Weskeag Marsh. The walk will take place rain or shine.

Gentalen has worked for 25 years as a naturalist via environmental education and ecotourism programs in 13 states, including Alaska, California, Georgia, and Massachusetts. He currently works as a steward/naturalist for Maine Coast Heritage Trust with most of his work focusing on Vinalhaven Island in Penobscot Bay. He also leads walks and talks and outreach programs with schools up and down the coast of Maine.

Gentalen edits the Vinalhaven sightings report nature blog and writes the column Nature Bummin’ for the St. George Dragon community journal as well. On the side Gentalen does tracking, breeding bird and vernal pool surveys.

In his free time he likes to go outside and look around.

Gentalen lives in St. George with his wife and son.

Bobolinks are known for their bubbling songs and their striking black and white plumage. They commonly nest on the ground in New England hayfields, forming their homes from twigs and grass.

Conserving Bobolink habitat also aids in maintaining populations of other declining grassland birds, which is intricately tied to a healthy agricultural industry.

The guided walk is free of charge and begins at the Riverview Hayfields trailhead opposite the Finnish Church on Route 131 in South Thomaston. Look for signs directing you to parking when you arrive.

Georges River Land Trust is committed to protecting the ecosystems and traditional heritage of the Georges River watershed region.
