CAMDEN — The third annual Leonard Lookner Memorial Camden Roadside Cleanup will take place on Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13, 2019. The cleanup is organized by Alison McKellar and Jenna Lookner.

The cleanup began in 2017 as a celebration of Earth Day and to honor the late Leonard Lookner, a Camden Select Board member and community leader who passed away February 5, 2017. At 76, Leonard was a spry and active man who routinely walked from his home on Melvin Heights Road into downtown Camden, filling his pockets with roadside trash during the approximately four-mile round trip walk.

Volunteers are invited to meet at Hannaford Supermarket in Camden at 9 a.m. both Friday and Saturday. There, they will receive safety vests and equipment, trash pickers, trash bags, and road assignments. To receive a road assignment in advance, please contact Alison McKellar at amckellar@camdenmaine.gov.

The cleanup was initially inspired by the road cleanups organized as part of a "Keep Rockport Beautiful" campaign, as well as by Leonard's constant mission to clear Camden's roadsides of trash.

During previous April cleanups, volunteers have removed approximately 2,000 pounds of trash from Camden’s roadsides each time, the goal in 2019 is to remove more than one ton of trash over the two days.

While the cleanup will focus on Camden’s 58 miles of roads, residents from all communities are welcome to participate in this fun, community building all-ages event!

There is a Facebook page set up for the event, and those interested in volunteering can inquire via Facebook or email Alison at amckellar@camdenmaine.gov or Jenna at jlookner@camdenmaine.gov or jenna.lookner@gmail.com. Interested volunteers can also contact Jenna via phone at (617) 894-5766.

For those who cannot make the event but would like to assist, please inquire with Alison or Jenna and receive a road assignment and supplies.

For those unable to make the cleanup but wishing to participate in a community cleanup event, there are many upcoming opportunities to assist after the long winter! In Rockport, the “Keep Rockport Beautiful” cleanup will take place Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27. More information can be found here.

Hosted by “Keep Knox County Beautiful,” the inaugural Route 1 Relay is an ambitious event that will take place May 3 and May 4. Generously sponsored by businesses from Warren to Camden, including lead sponsor Horch Roofing, this new event aims to remove litter from all of Knox County’s portion of Route 1. To learn more, visit the Route 1 Relay on Facebook.

Lincolnville will host their Spring 2019 Lincolnville Roadside Cleanup on Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20. Sponsored by Mid-Coast Waste Watch and the Lincolnville Community Library, interested participants can learn more about this Earth Day-weekend event by visiting the Facebook event page here.

With the numerous community cleanup opportunities in 2019, organizers are hoping for greater participation than ever, resulting in cleaner, healthier, litter-free roadsides as spring in Midcoast Maine continues.
