NORTHPORT — A Belfast man was lucky to avoid injury following a single-vehicle accident on Route 1 Jan. 18, which occurred a little before 5 pm. in Northport, near Wood Lane.

The driver has been identified by Maine State Police as 21-year-old Andrew Goguen, who was able to escape the vehicle after the crash, according to Trooper Thomas Bureau.

Goguen was traveling north when his vehicle began to swerve at the top of a hill, sliding roughly a quarter mile before leaving the roadway to the right. The white Ford F250 took out a utility pole, which came to rest on top of the vehicle.

Bureau wrote in an email that police believe Goguen was traveling too fast for the snowy weather and slippery road conditions, contributing to the crash.

Downed power lines prohibited emergency personnel from going near the vehicle until Central Maine Power could arrive on the scene to ensure the lines were dead, according to an emergency worker.

The pole was replaced by CMP the same night as the incident.

No citations were issued as a result of the crash.
