ROCKPORT — David Richard Ball, 66, passed peacefully into heaven at his home on Sunday, December 20, 2020 from metastatic melanoma.

Born March 12, 1954 in New Milford, Connecticut to Richard L. and Beatrice (Mosher) Ball, he spent his childhood in Rockland and Harpswell before his family moved to Camden in 1967.

Over the years David worked as a scallop fisherman, building contractor, a certified building inspector with NACHI certification (National Association Certified Home Inspector), and a master oil service technician with
Dead River Co.

He had fond memories scalloping aboard the F/V Pocahontas out of New Bedford, Massachusetts. David made lifelong friendships with the crew on the Pocahontas. Whenever he had that far away look in his eyes, it was evident that he was reminiscing of his days at sea.

David showed his adventurous spirit working as a construction foreman developing a private island named “Over Yonder Cay” in the Bahamas. He had many stories to share of his three year adventure.

David was a self-taught artist who painted fishing vessels and nautical scenes. He loved the ocean and was the happiest when he was out on the bay. He enjoyed landscaping and built a beautiful patio at his home. He loved all animals and especially enjoyed watching the wildlife from his window. Although a man of few words, he had a generous, soft, sweet soul.

Predeceased by his parents, his grandmother, Edna Ball, and his favorite uncle, Thornton Ball, he is survived by his beloved companion, Debra Drake of Rockport; his son, Jacob Ball of Caribou; his daughter Kimberly Smalls of Savannah, Georgia; his sisters, Kathy Ball of Camden, and Melodie Peet of Guilford, Connecticut; his grandson Anthony Daniel of Savannah, Georgia; his nephew Zack Thomas of Windham; and several cousins.

David also leaves behind his extended family, Donald and Barbara Drake of Lincolnville; Christopher and Sarah Lawton of Rockport, who helped care for him daily; and his grandson Bode Lawton who was the light of his life.

David, may you rest easy in fair winds and a calm sea.
