Damariscotta Lions, Rockland Ford captures season-opening Babe Ruth wins

MIDCOAST — The Babe Ruth baseball season got underway Sunday, May 23 in the Midcoast with four of the area’s five teams in action. 

This season, the Midcoast Babe Ruth Baseball League consists of five teams: Waldoboro (representing the RSU 40 area), Rockland Ford (representing the RSU 13 area), Granite Coast (representing a portion of the Five Towns area), P.G. Willey (representing a portion of the Five Towns area) and Damariscotta Lions. 

Teams will play 10 regular season games and every team will qualify for the league playoffs, with the championship round being a best-of-three series for the first time in more than a decade.

The regular season runs from May 23 to July 6. Games will be played Sundays for the weeks of May 23, May 30 and June 6. 

Regular season games will be held Sunday and Thursday during the week of June 13. From there, games are held Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays until July 4 when the Sunday slate is shifted a day early to Saturday, July 3. 

The playoffs will be conducted Saturday, July 10 to Monday, July 12.

A play-in contest held at 9 a.m. on the first playoff day between the fourth and fifth seeded teams. The first semifinal, with the play-in winner challenging the top-seeded team, squaring off at noon and the second semifinal contest at 3 p.m. 

Championship Sunday will consist of a doubleheader contest beginning at 11 a.m. with an if-needed third game tie-breaker penciled for Monday at 5 p.m.
