BELFAST — An antique map of Waldo County dated 1859 and owned by the Town of Unity is now on display in the main lobby of the Waldo County Finance Office thanks to efforts by Unity Selectman Penny Sampson.

The map is mounted in a handcrafted frame designed and built by artist and craftsman resident Richard Desrosier of the Maine Coastal Regional Reentry Center.

Sampson, who is serving her fourth year on the Waldo County Budget Committee, approached the County Commissioners during the fall of 2019 to offer the map for display in one of the County buildings – with understanding that it would be carefully preserved and returned to the Town of Unity if the County decided not to display it in the future.

“Waldo County Commissioners William Shorey, Betty Johnson, and Amy Fowler were pleased to accept this ‘permanent loan,’” said County of Waldo, in a news release.
