free after school programs teach steam bending, jig making, boat building

Community breakfast fundraiser to support youth programming at Apprenticeshop

Event has passed

ROCKLAND — Saturday, Feb. 22, from 7 a.m. - 10 a.m., Cafe Miranda will host a Community Breakfast in support of free youth programming at the Apprenticeshop. The breakfast will be first come, first served with a pre-fixe menu for $15 including coffee and orange juice.

Half of the breakfast proceeds will go to the Apprenticeshop to support its Maritime Skills program for local youth based in traditional boat building and boat handling techniques.

Currently, the Apprenticeshop is partnering with RSU 13 and One Community Many Voices to offer free after school programs for middle schoolers and in school engagement for high schoolers several days a week. Students are working on projects like steam bending to build toboggans and fishing nets, jig making to build skateboards, and assisting in the construction of a traditional Portugese sardine carrier.

As the season allows, students will get out on the water in traditionally built boats.

More About the Shop

The Apprenticeshop is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit school for traditional boatbuilding, seamanship, and sailing right on Rockland’s waterfront founded in 1972 on the experiential education philosophy of Kurt Hahn. The Apprenticeshop’s mission is to inspire personal growth through craftsmanship, community, and traditions of the sea.

The Shop is home to a dozen full-time, two-year boatbuilding apprentices, several 12-week apprentices, short workshops in associated boatbuilding skills, and hundreds of sailing students.

A variety of students – ages 6 to 75, international as well as local – benefit from and have life-changing experiences in our programs.

The Apprenticeshop also hosts a lecture series.

Visit them at 655 Main Street in Rockland.
