Come Boating! Winter Adventure Series talks with Doug Welch

Event has passed

Come Boating! Belfast’s Community Boating Organization and the Belfast Free Library are teaming up once again to offer the Winter Adventure Series. This year the series of three evening programs about adventures on the water will be offered virtually.

The first program, on Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 6:30 p.m., will feature a presentation by Doug Welch, executive director of The Maine Island Trail Association (MITA). Welch will show his film To Row and Let Go, about his experiences with ocean rowing, building a boat at the legendary Wooden Boat School, and exploring 34 islands on the Maine Island Trail.

Doug Welch has served as MITA’s executive director since 2007. He cannot imagine a more worthwhile and enjoyable mission to pursue. Previously he was a vice president with Youth Alternatives in Portland. Before that he spent five years with the Island Alliance – a nonprofit organization charged with developing programs in the new Boston Harbor Islands National Park. He lives in Portland with his family.

The Winter Adventure Series continues Tuesdays: February 9 with a presentation by Art Paine, “Boats Light Up My Day,” about his lifelong love of designing, building and restoring boats; on March 9, Leigh Dorsey and Damian Colbry will give a slide talk, “Rowing to Wild,” about their 10 day row of the entire coast of Maine in 2018.
