ROCKLAND — The Coastal Navigators Special Olympics team will be hosting their 8th annual spaghetti supper, silent auction and live auction on December 7 at a new location, the Congregational Church in Rockland from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $7 for adults & $5 for students.
Donated items that will go up bid include holiday wreaths, Michael Good earrings, Christmas center pieces, gift certificates to local businesses, a Household Membership to the Owls Head Transportation Museum and much more.
The Coastal Navigators team is a group of 25 to 38 adults with intellectual and/or physical disabilities. This team participates in several Special Olympic events for adults each year here in Maine. This past year the team has competed in Orono for the track & field Summer Olympics, Motor Activities at Hampden Academy, participated in the Special Olympics regional Swim meet in Belfast, went to USM for the basketball skills tournament and this past August competed in the Tennis Skills State Championship right here at the Mid-Coast Recreation center in Rockport. This winter the team will compete in the snow shoeing and cross country skiing events at Sugarloaf for the Winter Olympics.
During the year practices are held for each of these sporting events in order to prepare these individuals for their competitions thanks to the help of dedicated volunteers. The program provide on average 10 to 14 scholarships or partial scholarships each year to our athletes who would not be able to participate otherwise. Coaches also are trained for each of these events every three years.
