Coastal Navigators Special Olympians team holds annual fundraiser Dec. 8

On December 8, the Coastal Navigators Special Olympians team will host its seventh annual fundraiser, which includes spaghetti supper, silent auction and live auction, 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the Camden Congregational Church.

The team consists of 7-10 coaches and 35 athletes.

The athletes receive residential services, work services and /or community support services through Coastal Opportunities. Special Olympics of Maine provides year-round athletic training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports events for people with intellectual disabilities.

The coaches for the team provide continued opportunities to develop respect, ensure positive experiences, to develop health and safety awareness, encourage teamwork, and experiences to last a lifetime.

The fundraiser cost is $7 for adults & $5 for students. Donations for the auction include holiday wreaths, Michael Good earrings, Christmas center pieces, gift certificates to local businesses and much more.

Coastal Navigators is focused on providing year-round training and coaching for athletes. Its team includes of 25-36 adults with intellectual and or physical disabilities and who participate in many Special Olympic events in Maine.

The team participated this past year in the winter games at Sugarloaf Mountain, Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing, the Central Maine Basketball Tourney, the Central Maine Motor Skills Meet, the Regional area Swim Meet in Belfast, the Summer Games track and field meet in Orno and finally the Tennis competition this past August at the Mid-coast Rec Center in Rockport.

With the help of dedicated volunteers, Coastal Navigators provide the logistics, supports and guidance for this team. During the year, yhruy organize practices for each of these sporting events in order to prepare the athletes for their competitions. They provide, on average 10-14 scholarships or partial scholarships each year to athletes who would not be able to participate otherwise. Coaches are trained by Special Olympics of Maine for each of these events every three years.
