CAMDEN — Catherine Norton Simaitis, 89, died peacefully, Saturday, May 18, 2019 at Windward Gardens, her home for the past 15 years.

Born on Matinicus Isle, July 29, 1929, she was the daughter of Cecelia and Maxwell Young. She lived for a time on both, Matinicus and Crie Haven.

She was a graduate of Rockland High School, and a member of the National Honor Society. Her first job was working for Dr. Barbara Fuller in Rockland.

In 1953, Catherine moved to Hartford, CT. She began her career at Aetna Life and Casualty Insurance Company where she was employed in various positions. She started as a private secretary, moved to supervisor
in the Claims Department and later was a Prescription Drug Auditor, which involved travel to the Midwest.

Catherine retired after 20 years of service, and returned home to Rockland, Maine in 1980.

During her retirement, she worked for four years for the Federal Government in the Office of Personnel Management in Portsmouth, NH as a proctor for government and military employees in Maine. She was active
in the Rockland Chapter of AARP, worked as volunteer at Pen Bay Medical Center doing escort and reception services, as well as serving as a Trustee at Pratt Memorial Methodist Church for five years.

Catherine was pre-deceased by her brother, Roger, and a sister, Beverly; she is survived by her daughter, Deborah West and her husband Mark of Powells Point, NC; her sons, Peter Norton and his wife Mary of West Hartford, CT, Anthony Simaitis, Jr. of Warren; her grandchildren, Kellie Gardner of Jarvisburg, NC, Lisa Canada of Easton, CT, Jennifer McDowell of Southington, CT, Michael Norton of Simsbury, CT, Mallory Simaitis,
Robert Batty, both of South Thomaston; Brittany Wall whom she considered a grandchild; her great-grandchildren, Kelsie Dougherty of Raleigh, NC, Sydney Gardner of Jarvisburg, NC, Dennis Canada, IV, Jessica Canada both of Easton, CT, Emma and Evelyn McDowell both of Southington, CT, Kingston, Spencer and Quincy Norton, all of Simsbury, CT; her brother Gary Young and his wife Lois of Owls Head; a sister-in-law Jean Young of South Thomaston; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A graveside celebration of her life will be held Monday, June 17, at 2 p.m., at Sea View Cemetery, Warrenton Avenue, Glen Cove.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either, American Heart Association, 51, US Route One, Suite M, Scarborough, ME 04074, or Windward Gardens, Patient Activities Fund, 105 Mechanic Street, Camden, Maine 04843.
