Caribbean night, open mic at Boothbay Harbor Opera House
March roared in like a lion with the high octane appearance of the acclaimed Celtgrass group We Banjo 3 at the Opera House in Boothbay Harbor, and the month continues with Open Mic and the annual Caribbean Night featuring the island sound of the Pan Fried Steel Drum Band.
In what has become an annual rite of spring, the many drummers of the Pan Fried group will bring their sun on your back and sand-between-your-toes sound to the stage on Saturday, March 24. Downstairs, the Opera House bar will be serving up a special island punch in addition to beer and wine and the Friends of the Opera House have promised to have island inspired desserts on hand for hungry dancers.
The doors open early, at 6:30 p.m., and the music starts at 7. Whether dancing or sitting back and enjoying the concert, this is a night for everyone. Wear your flip flops. Advance tickets available through the box office at 86 Townsend Ave., open Tuesday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m, or by calling 633-5159. Advance discounted tickets are $10. Regularly priced tickets are $15 and are available online at boothbayoperahouse.com and at the door.
The winter Open Mic series continues on Friday, March 9, upstairs in the historic Opera House bar. Past open mics have include solo, due, trio and quartet groups of vocalists and instrumentalists in addition to poets. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for early arrivals and sign-ups and the mic goes live at 7. This month’s Open Mic will be hosted by Chip Schwehm and Bruce MacDonald. There is no admission charge, but donations to support the Opera House are encouraged. Please come out and cheer on your neighbors and be prepared to be surprised.
