Canoe, kayak championship film from 1940 screening in Belfast
BELFAST — The Come Boating! Adventure Series at the Belfast Free Library returns with a re-scheduled program, Tuesday, May 14, at 6:30 p.m., with a screening of rare film footage from the 1940 National Whitewater Championships.
Maine canoeist Zip Kellogg will present the film featuring the First National Whitewater Canoe and Kayak Championships held here in Maine in 1940 on the legendary Rapid River.
The film was missing for about 70 years and Kellogg found it down the road at the Northeast Historic Film in Bucksport.
Kellogg puts the race in the context of its time using some informative and hilarious notes and letters he has turned up, according to Belfast Free Library, in a news release.
“This is an action packed film in which not everyone went home after the race with the same boat – if they took a boat at all,” said the Library, in the release.
The talk, co-sponsored by Come Boating! Belfast’s Community Boating Organization and the Belfast Free Library is free and open to all.
