READFIELD — The Camden Snow Bowl middle school ski team participated in its first meet of the season on a frigid day in Readfield at the O’Connor Alpine Training Center.

The season opener for the snow bowl team was the 14th annual Marlee Johnston Alpine Ski Race to Remember, which is held in honor of a Fayette teen and Maranacook ski racer killed by gun violence.

“It was cold, never getting above 15 degrees, but the snow was perfect for racing,” said Camden head coach Weber Roberts. “It was hard and fast, but grippy — if you got good edge angles above the gate.”

The Camden team has 10 boys and 11 girls and is comprised of fifth through eighth grade students with half the team new to skiing.

“We started the season with 2 months of dryland training and 2 on-snow days at Sugarloaf this year and we have had excellent snow coverage at the Snow Bowl for training, the results of which are that all of the new kids performed exceptionally well,” said Camden assistant coach Todd Williams.

Camden raced against teams from Farmington, Rangeley, Gray, Maranacook, Auburn, Kent’s Hill, Oxford Hills and Mount Vernon.

Jet Lindelof and Landon Marquis were in the top ten for boys and Abigail Williams was in the top ten for girls in a field of over 115 competitors.

The Camden girls team finished third for the day and the boys finished second.
