The Camden Rotary Club has announced that it is the first Rotary Club in New England to charter as a “Peacebuilder Club.” This distinction reflects the Camden Rotary’s Club commitment to engage in peace projects and initiatives that create infrastructures for peace within the local community, according to Camden Rotary, in a news release.
The Camden Rotary Club is one of 220 clubs worldwide that have been recognized by Rotary International for its commitment to peace.
For its first community peace initiative, the Camden Rotary Club invites the general public to a special program it will host on Tuesday, January 19, at noon. This program will take place the day before the U.S. Presidential Inauguration.
Steve Becton, Chief Officer of Equity and Inclusion for Facing History and Ourselves, will speak about “courageous conversations”: what they are and why our community should consider engaging in them.
“Just like so many of us in our community, Rotarians are dismayed by the growing divide in our nation,” said Chris Richmond, President of the Camden Rotary Club. “As people of action, the Camden Rotary invites our neighbors, friends, and people of all political persuasions to join us in an effort to learn about how we can create platforms for productive, meaningful, and respectful exchange – despite our differences.”

The Camden Rotary Club has served the community since 1925, raising funds to help local nonprofit organizations and providing volunteer services. Since 2011, the club has invested $238,000 in the community via its grants to nonprofit organizations in Knox County and Lincolnville. The Club has also invested in local students by awarding $149,000 in scholarships since 2017. In addition to awarding charitable grants and scholarships each year, the Club recently deployed an emergency task force to help nonprofit organizations in Knox County and Lincolnville that are most directly impacted by the pandemic.
