Camden Rockport Historical Society to celebrate Maine Maple Sugar Sunday

CAMDEN and ROCKPORT — Planning to enjoy Maine Maple Sunday? How about a little history to boot! In 2019 March 24 is Maine Maple Sugar Sunday and Camden Rockport Historical Society's historic homestead and Museum campus is eager to welcome the public for maple-related festivities. 

From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. maple sugaring demonstrations are planned in the 1820 sugar house. Admission is free and includes a dish of ice cream topped with Maine maple syrup. Families are invited to participate in this fun, traditional all-ages celebration of spring. 

The driveway to the museum and historic homestead campus is conveniently located on the Camden-Rockport border, just past Hannaford supermarket, on the right, off Route 1 going South. 

The museum will be open so that visitors can tour the exhibits and learn more about the history of Camden and Rockport. Special exhibits will include an exploration of the history of local schools, a display of early ice harvesting tools, an exhibit on the history of shipbuilding in Camden and Rockport, and of course, an exhibit of early maple sugaring tools. 

Special guest Hugh Lane will be on hand to demonstrate hand tool use and care at the Conway House during the Maine Maple Sugar Sunday event. Lane is a woodworker, practitioner of traditional vessels and builder of his family’s timber frame home in Rockport. He enjoys teaching legacy skills being lost in the computer age.

Board members and volunteers will be on hand to welcome visitors and discuss the historical society with interested parties. Volunteers interested in working with the historical society over the summer are invited to learn more and express their interest. hearing from any prospective summer
