Camden Hills ice hockey falls in hard-fought mid-week game

ROCKPORT — The Camden Hills varsity ice hockey team squared off in a tough battle Wednesday, Feb. 6 at the Midcoast Recreation Center against Old Town/Orono. 

After a hard-fought game, the visitors were able to edge Camden Hills 5-2. 

Old Town netted two goals in each the first and second period, plus one in the third. Camden Hills, meanwhile, netted its pair of goals in the opening period. 

Scoring for Camden Hills were Bryce Tyler (Charlie Griebel assist) and Dylan Hastings (Quinn Brown assist). 

Scoring for Old Town/Orono were Tyler McCannell (twice; Gabe Talon assist, Trent Lick assist), Zach Needham (twice; Maddox Sapiel assist, Adam Henderson assist) and Lick (Talon assist). 

Guarding the goalie net for Camden Hills was Jackson Bernier (19 saves), while Khole Parker (10 saves) guarded the Old Town/Orono net. 

Camden Hills lost three players to injury during the contest. 

“I was extremely proud and impressed with the work ethic and level of productivity from the Camden players that had to take on different roles to bring the game home after so many players were lost to injury,” said Camden Hills head coach John Magri.

Magri credited Elias Libby, Rory Carlson and James Lynch for their play and stepping up to the plate for the Windjammers. 

With the loss, Camden Hills sits at 8-6 on the season with four games remaining on the regular season slate. 

The Windjammers will hit the road on Saturday, Feb. 9 to play Waterville/Winslow, also known as the Kennebec Riverhawks, at 11:30 a.m.; host Messalonskee on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m.; travel to John Bapst/Mount Desert Island/Bangor Christian on Monday, Feb. 18 at 6:30 p.m.; and host Houlton/Hodgdon/Southern Aroostook/Katahdin on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 5:50 p.m.

In the Class B North standings, Camden Hills sits in third place with 60.8951 points. The top six teams in the nine-team division qualify for the playoffs. Old Town/Orono (84.8765 points) sits in first, while Waterville/Winslow (71.6975) sits in second.
