Camden Hills boys soccer wins key homecoming game

ROCKPORT — The Camden Hills varsity boys soccer team experienced smooth sailing, according to the team’s head coach, Ryan Hurley, for the Windjammers’ Saturday, Sept. 14 homecoming contest against Messalonskee.

Both teams entered the conference showdown with perfect 2-0 records, though only the hosts exited the contest with an unblemished record courtesy a 4-0 victory.

“The atmosphere was electric with a sizable homecoming crowd in attendance cheering on the teams,” remarked Hurley.

Quinn Brown opened the scoring for the Windjammers when he crashed the goal and cleaned up a rebound with 18 minutes to play in the half.

Not to be outdone, Hugh Costigan jumped onto a free ball that bounced out to the top of the box after a corner kick and slotted it low and hard to double the Windjammer lead a mere five minutes before halftime.

Brown found the back of the net once again 15 seconds into the second half on a Messalonskee turnover.

Levi Guay notched the host’s final tally when he scored at the 28:37 mark.

Casey Messer halted all of Messalonskee’s shots — six in total.

"This was a big win for us in front of a great crowd at Homecoming,” said Hurley. “Many thanks to all the members of the community that pitched in to make today a success and the boys were excited to see so many familiar faces brave the wind and rain to support them in the closing game of the day.”

With his team off to a perfect 3-0 start, Hurley is pleased with how the team is playing thus far.

“The team is playing well and showcasing some exciting soccer, we are right where we want to be at this point of the year,” he said.

Camden Hills will be tasked with a trio of contests in the upcoming week, including road trips to Mount Ararat (Sept. 17) and Skowhegan (Sept. 21) and a home game with Brunswick (Sept. 19).

“Next week is going to be a tough week with three games, but I expect us to give it everything we have and hopefully the results will follow suit,” Hurley said.
