Thu, 05/23/2019 - 10:45am

The Camden Hills varsity boys lacrosse team participated in three road contests recently and collected two victories during the road series.

With the added wins, the Windjammers now sit at 3-7 on the season.

Up next for Camden Hills will be a pair of home games to finish the regular season.

The Windjammers will host Winslow on Thursday, May 23 and Brewer on Wednesday, May 29. Both games are slated for 4 p.m. starts.

Camden Hills 8, Mount Blue 5

In a May 14 showdown at Thomas College in Waterville, the visiting Windjammers collected an 8-5 victory.

Camden Hills tallied four goals in the first quarter, three in the third and one in the fourth, while Mount Blue recorded four in the first and and one in the third.

Scoring for Camden Hills were Levi Guay (two goals, two assists), Kieran McGrath (two goals), Charlie Griebel (goal, four assists), Noah Quesnel (two goals) and Thomas Southworth (goal).

James Lynch recorded 16 saves in the goalie net for Camden Hills.

The first three minutes of the game were very different than the rest of the game as Mount Blue held a 4-0 advantage after the opening three minutes, but were then held to only one goal for the final 45 minute of the game.

“Mt. Blue took control of the game in the first 3 minutes with face-off wins and quick transitions to start the game,” said Camden Hills head coach Roger Harrison. “We called a timeout after 3 minutes, made some defensive adjustments, and this paid off for the rest of the game. Our defense of Andrew Orne, Owen Cooper, Dylan Hastings, and Taylor Wesbrock shut the Mt. Blue offense down for the last 45 minutes of the game.”

Rogers also credited Guay, Griebel, Quesnel and Lynch for having, as he said, a huge game for the Windjammers, while describing Guay, Griebel and Quesnel as players who will be unstoppable forces for the Windjammers in the future.

Camden Hills 12, Lincoln Academy 4

In Newcastle on Thursday, May 16, the Windjammers collected yet another road victory, this time by the score of 12-4.

Camden Hills recorded four goals in the opening quarter, five in the second and three in the fourth, while the hosts recorded one in the first, two in the second and one in the fourth.

Scoring for Camden Hills were Bryce Tyler (three goals, three assists), Quesnel (three goals), McGrath (three goals), Matt Nickerson (goal, assist), Griebel (goal) and Jackson Fitch (goal).

Pacing the Lincoln Academy offense were Noaln Michael (three goals), Gardner Skiff (two assists) and Jayden Dolloff (goal).

As goalie, Lynch recorded 10 saves for Camden Hills.

Rogers called the game a complete team victory for the Windjammers.

“Andrew Orne and Dylan Hastings had huge games for us in the defensive end,” Rogers stated. “They contained two really good attackmen in Nolan Michael and Liam Cullina who have scored goals in bunches throughout their high school careers. Our midfield dominated between the restraining boxes and gained us key positions with Nolan Delehey, Noah Quesnel, and our LSM Taylor Wesbrock getting big ground balls and clears throughout the game.”

Gardiner 13, Camden Hills 6

On the road, once again, Camden Hills fell to the hosts 13-6 on Tuesday, May 21.

The Windjammers scored twice in the first quarter, once in the third and three fourth, while Gardiner recorded two goals in the first, five in the second, four in the third and two in the fourth.

Scoring for Camden Hills were Griebel (four goals, assist, seven ground balls), Nickerson (goal, three assists, seven ground balls) and McGrath (goal, assist).

Lynch tallied six saves in the Windjammer goalie net.

The game was a physical one with five penalties for Camden Hills and 10 for Gardiner, though Rogers stated the Windjammers knew the game would be a physical one.

“The games against Gardiner are always hard hitting, high pressure, and fast paced,” he stated. “We beat them last year for the first time in program history and we knew they wanted this win on their Senior night.”

Offensively for the Windjammers, Rogers praised Griebel and Nickerson for their play.

“They wouldn’t let this game get out of hand for us and never let the team quit,” Rogers said. “They were unstoppable 1 v 1, they picked up every ground ball, and they competed with a very experienced and physical Gardner team all game long. I cannot say enough positive things about their leadership today.”

On the defensive side of the ball, Orne, Cooper and Wesbrock received praised from their head coach for having a big game, as Rogers described, against a “very formidable Gardiner attack.”
