Camden Conference: Distinguished panel to discuss ‘Violence, Victims and Healing’

PORTLAND — When bad things traumatize good communities will be the topic for a distinguished prize-winning panel of journalists, Monday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m., at Hannaford Hall on the campus of the University of Southern Maine.

The event, “Violence, Victims, and Healing” is sponsored by the Camden Conference and is free and open to the public.

Presenting will be:

Julie Anderson, editor in chief of two major news outlets in Florida, one of which, the Sun-Sentinel in Ft. Lauderdale, won a Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the mass shooting at the Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla, in 2018.

David Shribman, recently retired editor of the Post-Gazette in Pittsburgh who led coverage of the fatal shooting at Tree of Life synagogue in 2018 and whose staff also won a Pulitzer for that work.

Brian McGrory, editor of The Boston Globe, who directed coverage of the Marathon Bombing in 2013 and whose staff was also a Pulitzer winner for that coverage.

Peter Imber, retired ABC News producer and past president of the Camden Conference who covered the Katrina Hurricane story in New Orleans in 2005 as well as other tragedies.

The discussion will be moderated by reporter Megan Gray of the Portland Press Herald who has twice been honored as the outstanding young journalist in her region. She previously reported for the Concord Monitor in New Hampshire.

The panelists will recount the challenges of reporting such massive and tragic stories but also talk about how their news organizations helped with the healing process in the affected communities.

This event is presented in anticipation of the 33rd Annual Camden Conference — The Media Revolution: Changing the World, February 21-23, 2020, live at the Camden Opera House and livestreamed to the Hutchinson Center in Belfast, Strand Theatre in Rockland, and Hannaford Hall in Portland, and independent streaming site Osher@Dartmouth in Hanover, NH.
