ROCKLAND — New York City’s Broken Box Mime Theater will perform “Outside Voices”, a Best-of Broken Box showcase, on Saturday, June 10 and Sunday, June 11 at Steel House outdoor amphitheater in Rockland. Showtimes are 3 p.m. As part of the Strand Theatre’s New Century Series, tickets are offered on a Pay-What-You-Can scale of $0-20.

The group will also offer a physical storytelling workshop.

Broken Box Mime Theater (BKBX) is a physical theater company that brings a unique blend of performance art, pantomime, and contemporary theater to these two-day-only showcase performances. Set to a heart-thumping soundtrack and performed without a single spoken word, "Outside Voices" marks the company’s first-ever public performance in Maine. Stories range from the hysterical to the heartwarming.

“Come share in Broken Box’s vision of ‘mime, redefined,’” said Strand Theatre, in a news release.

On Sunday, June 11, at 12 p.m., BKBX will offer a physical storytelling workshop called “Communicate More - Say Less” at Steel House’s indoor event space. The company invites performers, directors, playwrights, theater artists, and the mime-curious of all backgrounds to join in exploring the audience's imagination as medium. Participants will use creative play, creative problem-solving, and group innovation to make the seemingly unstageable stageable, introducing the audience’s imagination as a storytelling tool. For ages 12 and up. No experience necessary, all access needs welcome. Find more details on the Strand Theatre website.

Broken Box Mime Theater is a collaborative theater company that performs original, contemporary short plays entirely through movement. Based in NYC and founded in 2011, they reimagine French pantomime through the lens of contemporary US American theater. BKBX believes in making innovative, provocative theater that erases the spoken language barrier and champions the power of simplicity in performance. Their 18 performing company members are diverse in terms of race, gender, sexual orientation, training, background, mental health identity, and writing style. BKBX has been producing both Mainstage and Family shows since 2011, toured to cities across the US, and taught physical storytelling in classrooms and theaters from NYC to Taiwan. They are winners of Innovative Theatre Awards for Outstanding Movement/Choreography, Performance Art, and Ensemble.

The presentation is sponsored by Steel House, with funding support from the Maine Arts Commission.
