BELFAST — On Thursday, Sept. 10, at 6 p.m., the City of Belfast will hold a dedication ceremony for the Walter Ash Jr. Recreation Area at Upper Mason Pond, off Swan Lake Avenue, in Belfast.
At the November 19, 2019, Belfast City Council Meeting the Council unanimously voted to rename the boat launch at upper Mason Pond the “Walter Ash Jr. Recreational Area” to honor his years of service to the community.
Walter Ash Jr. served in City or State government for more than 30 years, starting in the 1980s as president of the Belfast & Moosehead Lake Railroad, when the City owned the rail line. He served on the Belfast City Council from 1992 to 2003 and followed that with a single term in the State Legislature before first running for City of Belfast Mayor in 2007, which he held until 2017.
Belfast Mayor Eric Sanders and members of the City Council will be present at the event.
Event attendees are required to follow CDC guidelines regarding social distancing and mask wearing.
