Belfast Historical Society presents: Edgar Filmore Hanson
BELFAST – “The Life and Times of Edgar Filmore Hanson, 1853-1933” will be the topic of the Belfast Historical Society’s meeting at 7 p.m., Monday, Sept 24, in the Abbott Room at the Belfast Free Library.
David Ruberti, Historical Society vice-president, will present the story of one of Belfast’s most colorful citizens and the dominant figure in early 20th century Belfast politics and business.
Hanson served as a ten-term mayor, was manager of the Dana Sarsaparilla Company, created Cream – a national magazine and, published the Waldo County Herald – a weekly newspaper.
It was through Hanson’s efforts, the steamship Belfast, crowned the Queen of Steamships, was built in 1907 and made her first run to her namesake city in 1909.
Belfast Historical Society meetings are free and open to the public and are held April through October.
