ORONO — On July 10, the University of Maine’s field hockey team officially announced its 2018 recruiting class comprised of six newcomers, including an incoming freshman from Waldo County.

"We want to welcome these great players to our program," University of Maine field hockey head coach Josette Babineau said in a university press release. "They all bring an outstanding level of skill and experience. They have all been great leaders in their respective programs. They are very hard working and will fit in well with our team culture. We are excited to have them in our Black Bear family!"

Joining the Black Bears in Orono is Waldo County’s own Kelsey Mehuren, who is a Searsmont native.

According to the university’s press release Mehuren will be a midfielder and earned KVAC all-conference honors all four seasons at Belfast High School, while also serving as a captain her senior season.

The release notes she led the Lions to a Northern Maine championship, along with state championship runner-up honors in 2016.

The release also notes Mehuren started all four seasons at Belfast and received all-state honors as a junior and senior. The release, finally, noted she was a member of the National Honor Society and the National Art Honor Society.

The Black Bears field hockey team will host Boston University for a preseason scrimmage Aug. 13 at 11 a.m. before holding a home season opener Aug. 24 against Holy Cross.
