BELFAST — Belfast Free Library's Friday Night Flix again feature “rewinds” of recent films. All the movies are free and take place at 7 p.m., in the Abbott Room of the Belfast Free Library.

This month Karen and Paul again remind us all how lucky we are to have a really good local cinema venue in Belfast - the Colonial Theatre, according to a news release. Featured are some second looks at quality dramas from the last few years, all of whom include Academy Award nominees.

The Florida Project (2017) on December 7 focuses on a six-year-old girl (played by an old-beyond-her-years young actress Brooklynn Prince) living in a motel in Florida. With a group of young cronies, she roams her neighborhood of garishly-painted motels and nearby Walt Disney World, and tries to help hold together her irresponsible young mother.

As counterpoint to her mother, the motel's manager (sensitively played by Willem Dafoe) tries to guide from a distance.

111 Min. In English, w/subtitles. Rated R.

On December 14, The Post (2017) acts as a reminder of the value of having an engaged, investigative, professional free press.

Meryl Streep portrays the Washington Post's Katherine Graham, and Tom Hanks its editor Ben Bradlee who help uncover and publish the Pentagon Papers.

The cover-up of the scandal that spanned the tenure of four U.S. Presidents forced Graham, the country's first female newspaper publisher, to find her power, and with her hard-driving editor, to join a historic battle between the press and the government.

116 Min. In English, w/subtitles. Rated PG-13

The month's offerings end on December 21 with the coming-of-age story of Lady Bird (2017).

Living in Sacramento in 2002, an artistically inclined seventeen-year-old girl, Christine "Lady Bird" MacPherson (played by Saoirse Ronan) longs for adventure, sophistication, and opportunity, but finds none of that in her conservative Catholic high school.

In the course of her senior year, she experiences her first romance, participation in the school play, and most importantly, the difficulties of applying to an out-of-state college that her family can't afford.

Actress Laurie Metcalf plays her prickly, hard-working mother, with whom Lady Bird has a loving relationship interspersed by realistic teenage ups and downs.

Written by Greta Gerwig (who grew up in the early 2000's in Sacramento), this film is Gerwig's first solo directorial debut.

In English, w/subtitles. 94 Min. Rated R.

On December 28, there will be no film.
