BELFAST — The Belfast Farmers' Market is celebrating the arrival of August and the full on vegetable season with a “Taste of the Market – Big Salad Bowl” event on Friday, August 4, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. under the center canopy. All are invited to sample what's in season. In the fashion of a potluck, each Market member will be adding something to the tasting table. You'll start out with a small bowl of fresh greens provided by member farms, then choose to add ingredients such as cheese crumbles, croutons, diced vegetables, mushrooms, grilled meats, and who knows what provided by the Market's twenty-nine members. You'll be able to top that off with specially prepared humus dressing.

While you're sampling the Big Salad Bowl, Belfast Bay Fiddlers will provide a lively musical backdrop as part of Market's al fresco music series. Live music by area musicians is offered each Friday throughout the outdoor market season. The schedule is listed on the Belfast Farmers' Market website.

If the Big Salad Bowl whets your appetite, market offers a lot of grab and eat food for sale such as cheeses, breads, humus, crackers and rolls, vegan and gluten free alternatives, energy bars, teas and lemonade, ice cream, yogurt, gelato and popsicles, hand pies, pickles jams, chutney and preserves, and a large array of cookies and other sweet baked goods, and crepes made to order while you wait.

Farmers' Market Kids Club continues each week through August 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. This year Coastal Healthcare Alliance, which oversees Pen Bay Medical Center, Waldo County General Hospital and community based health services, has put up some seed money to fund the Kids Club $2 token program. Kids get a token to spend toward healthy at-market food choices when they complete club activities each week. Program leader Beth Chamberlain combines fun activities for kids with learning how to make healthy food choices and introduces them to shopping for fresh local food at farmers' markets.

Belfast Farmers' Market is open year round: In summer: Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. through October at Waterfall Arts, 256 High Street and in winter market continues in the greenhouse at Aubuchon Hardware on Route 1. Learn more at
