Belfast baseball tops Nokomis in high-scoring affair

BELFAST — The Belfast varsity baseball team collected a victory over Nokomis in a high-scoring contest in Belfast on Monday, April 29 that saw the two squads combine for 28 runs on 27 hits. 

Thanks to the 17-11 victory, the host Lions improved its record to 3-0. 

Belfast will now challenge Lincoln Academy for its next game Wednesday, May 1 at 4 p.m. at home.  

In the Monday contest, Nokomis plated three runs in the second inning, two in each the third and seventh and four in the sixth. 

Belfast, meanwhile, plated two runs in each the second and third innings, four in the fourth, three in the fiftyh and six in the sixth. 

Nokomis tallied 14 hits, while Belfast tallied 13. 

Belfast committed one error, while Nokomis committed four. 

Cody Marquis (five innings, four strikeouts) and Avery Howell (one inning, one strikeout) worked the mound for Nokomis. 

Dakota Payson fired off six innings on the mound for Belfast and collected two strikeouts. Jason Bartlett contributed one inning on the mound. 

Leading the offensive charge for Nokomis were Shane Palmer (three hits and three RBIs), Gabe Gilley (two hits) and Josh Grozik (two RBIs). 

Pacing the Belfast offense were Luke Hamlin (three hits) and Payson (three RBIs).
