the raw, messy, confounding, beautiful place where love resides

Author talk with Belfast’s Deborah Shepherd: ‘So Happy Together’

Event has passed

The public is invited to a virtual conversation on Friday, April 23, at 7 p.m., when Belfast author Deborah Shepherd discusses her just-released debut novel, So Happy Together, with Caitlin Hamilton Summie, the founder and head of an independent book publicity and marketing firm located in Tennessee. The free event is being hosted by Left Bank Books, in Belfast.

“So Happy Together is a moving exploration of friendship and love, acceptance and tolerance, forgiveness, and honoring our authentic selves,” said Left Bank, in a news release.

Set in the sex, drugs, and rock and roll scene of the 1960s in Tucson, Arizona, and later in the 1980s New York suburbs, the story follows Carolyn (Caro) Mills as her stultifying marriage unravels and she dreams of reconnecting with an old love she hasn’t seen in twenty years. With her three children safely off to summer camp, Caro embarks on a pre-Facebook, pre-cell phone road trip to recapture who she once was and what she thinks she once had.

So Happy Together explores the conundrum of love and sexual attraction, creativity and family responsibilities, and what happens when they are out of sync. It is a story of missed opportunities, the tantalizing possibility of second chances, and what we leave behind, carry forward, and settle for when we choose. It sits in that raw, messy, confounding, beautiful place where love resides.

Shepherd was the executive director of Family Violence Project, the domestic violence resource center for Kennebec and Somerset counties in central Maine before her retirement in 2014. Her essays have been published on (“A Love Letter to Our Marriage Therapist”), (“Light”), (“The Long Haul”) and her covid-theme essay, “Snow Day, Maine, April 10, 2020,” was a winner in the Center for Interfaith Relations Sacred Essay Contest.

Hamilton Summie founded her book marketing and publicity firm in 2003 after a career with Penguin Putman and other national book publishers. She has published an award-winning collection of short stories, and her first novel will be published in January 2022.
