ROCKLAND — Author and journalist Sherry Boschert will read from and discuss her recent book 37 Words, a 50-year history of the federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in education, Thursday, April 6, at 5:30 p.m., in conversation with the Maine Women's Lobby at hello hello books and Rock City Cafe, 316 Main Street in Rockland.
Boschert will read from 37 Words and then join a representative from the Maine Women's Lobby in a discussion of Title IX's history and present, along with an overview of the Maine Women's Lobby's current work and policy priorities in the state.
By prohibiting sex discrimination in federally funded education, the 1972 legislation popularly known as Title IX profoundly changed the lives of women and girls in the United States, accelerating a movement for equal education in classrooms, on sports fields, and in all of campus life. 37 Words: Title IX and Fifty Years of Fighting Sex Discrimination is a sweeping and character-driven history of the legislation, from the earliest activists who fought for the law's passage to the law's implementation and subsequent challenges, a story that maps more general gains and setbacks for feminism since then and shows how some women benefit more than others. Spanning from Bernice Resnick Sandler, an early organizer for the law, to her trans grandchild, it's also a human story about women denied opportunities, students struggling for an education free from sexual harassment, and activists defying sexist discrimination.
Sherry Boschert is an award-winning journalist and the author of 37 Words and Plug-in Hybrids: The Cars That Will Recharge America (2006). Among her many honors, she received a Distinguished Service Award from the Society of Professional Journalists for her efforts to promote equity within the news industry. After forty years in the San Francisco Bay Area, she now lives in New Hampshire.
The Maine Women’s Lobby is a nonpartisan organization that advocates for gender-responsive and gender-equitable public policies, with a focus on those most affected by misogyny, sexism, and other forms of oppression. They advance policy efforts that ensure freedom from violence; freedom from discrimination; access to health care, including reproductive health care; economic justice; and systems which ensure equity and justice for all Mainers. The Maine Women's Lobby Education Fund helps Mainers develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to engage in feminist, anti-oppression-based civic life through programming focused on community building and community-based policy analysis, including the biennial Policy Roadmap for Economic Security, the Maine Women's Summit, Girls' Day at the Statehouse, and other programs.
