ROCKLAND — The Apprenticeshop invites all on Friday, Oct. 11, at 4 p.m., for a community potluck, open house, music, cider pressing and grand finale to the ‘Free Friday’ sailing series.
This will be the last Friday to get out on the boats and go for a free ride courtesy of the Apprenticeshop. The shop will be open for visitors to view current projects, from utilitarian skiffs to a 40-foot sailing hull.
Visitors will have the opportunity to sail on the traditional expedition boats used by the Apprenticeshop for seamanship training and expeditions, as well as more modern boats used for adult and youth sailing classes.
The Apprenticeshop began quietly offering the Free Friday sails in May. It was something very important to the directors and board members – helping more people have access to the waterfront and sailing, and not being limited by boat ownership or physical ability, according to Apprenticeshop, in a news release.
To date this initiative has brought nearly 250 people on the water; doubling the exposure brought by the existing sailing programs for youth and adults by the Apprenticeshop. The Free Friday sails have been advertised only by word of mouth, an effort to keep the event community-based and not a freebie for the masses passing by on Route 1. Despite this, late August crowds had to be turned away from already-full boats, according to Apprenticeshop.
As the weather has cooled off, so has some participation, but there’s never been a ‘cancelled’ event due to weather so far, and the only limitations between now and October 11 will be boats, staff and apprentices away to present at Common Ground Fair (Friday 9/20) and the bi-annual Apprenticeshop Expedition (Friday 9/27).
The Apprenticeshop has been a school for traditional boatbuilding and seamanship since 1972. The program philosophy is grounded in experiential education and there are opportunities for youth and adults to partake in classes, workshops, lectures, and more.
