WALDO COUNTY — With Waldo County moving from the green to yellow zone in the Maine Department of Education COVID-19 Health Advisory System, sports have been halted in the county for the time being. 

Each school, however, is taking a slightly different approach to the situation as noted in letters from respective school leaders. 

“Under [the Maine DOE yellow] designation we will be suspending sports for the remainder of the fall season [and] will be suspending all other in person co- and extracurricular activities until the county is determined to be ‘green’ again,” said Mount View High School Principal Zackary Freeman, in an Oct. 23 letter. 

Freeman noted in a letter to parents a virtual awards ceremony to celebrate the accomplishments of fall athletes will be planned for the near future. 

Searsport District High School, meanwhile, “will be taking a week by week approach as we hope to continue our fall sports season” though the school has canceled all games and practices through Oct. 31 with a fresh update forthcoming Friday, Oct. 30, according to an Oct. 24 letter from athletic director Christopher Hart. 

At Belfast Area High School, RSU 71 Superintendent Mary Alice McLean noted, Oct. 23: “When a county is coded yellow, all sports and co-curricular activities are suspended. Fortunately, our student-athletes have been involved in sports for many weeks and months. The administration will work diligently to create intramural activities using the swimming pool, the weight room, the gym, and playing fields.”
